Residence permit for spouse or cohabiting partner

A residence permit may be granted to an individual intending to move to Iceland to live with his/her spouse or cohabiting partner in Iceland. The requirement is that the spouse or cohabiting partner is an Icelandic or a Scandinavian citizen, a foreign citizen holding a permanent residence permit or a temporary residence permit on grounds of work requiring qualified expertise, for athletes, for parents, on grounds of international protection, humanitarian grounds, special connection to Iceland or advanced studies.

Residence permit for a child under the age of 18

According to the Act on Foreigners a child is an individual under the age of 18 that is not married.

A residence permit for a child under the age of 18 can amongst other things be granted if his/her parent resides in Iceland and is an Icelandic citizen, a Nordic citizen, a foreign citizen who has a permanent residence permit, a foreign citizen who has a temporary residence permit, works as a qualified specialist or an athlete, is a spouse or cohabiting partner.

The condition is that the child is in the custody of and provided for by the person exercising such right and that the child will live with the parent having custody.

Residence permit for parent 67 years of age or older

A residence permit can be granted to an individual who is 67 years of age or older if the relevant person has an adult child in Iceland and the plan is to move to Iceland.

Residence permits for parents of a child under the age of 18

If certain requirements are met, the custodian parent of a child who is under the age of 18 and who resides in Iceland may be granted with a residence permit in Iceland. The requirements for granting a permit depends on whether the applicant intends to reside with the child or not.
